In January 2018, Safe Work Australia issued a report revealing that there were 104,770 serious Australian workers’ compensation claims lodged in 2015-16. The median time lost for a serious claim increased by 33% from 2000-1 to 2015-16 whilst the median compensation paid for a serious claim increased by 30%.


The top three occupations with the highest rates of serious claims were labourers, machinery operators and drivers and community and personal services workers. The top three industries with the highest rate of serious claims were Manufacturing, Construction and Agriculture.


Of the causes of these serious claims, 10% were disease related and 90% were due to injury and musculoskeletal disorders.
